The Greek Theater of Taormina: a tribute to Magna Graecia, the mother of European culture.
Dating back to the third century BC, a Hellenistic amphitheater graced the city of Taormina, with traces of another ancient structure discovered underneath the Roman cavea. During the Roman era, the amphitheater was reconstructed, possibly during the reign of Hadrian or Trajan. In the third century AD, it was renovated with a new layout, transforming the orchestra into an arena and removing the stage. This grand theatre boasted a diameter of 107 metres (351 ft) and could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. As one of the oldest theaters in Magna Graecia, it continues to host the renowned Taormina Film Festival every year.
